Some iPhone Duo owners say the inner foldable screen cracked within hours or days of purchase. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported the problem is real, and Apple acknowledged an inner-display issue on a small number of units. Apple tells affected owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement. iFixit’s teardown points to a possible hinge stress spot, but that’s a theory, not a confirmed cause. In the Philippines, the phone becomes available on October 30. business-standardslashgear
Updated October 29, 2026. This story is still developing.
I’m not really an iPhone guy. The only iPhone I ever had was
an iPhone 4, and that was a long time ago. (confirm) But this is a tech
story, and I’m curious.
A few weeks ago I wrote about the iPhone
Duo’s ₱159,990 price in the Philippines. I even said Apple watched everyone
else’s foldable mistakes and took notes.
Then the screens started cracking. 😅
Grabe, ₱159,990 tapos nag-crack agad? Netizens are already
having fun with it, and honestly, I get it. For that price, I expect a phone to
survive at least one weekend.
What are owners reporting?
Owners describe a crunching sound when unfolding the phone,
followed by a large crack along the center crease. Some early reports said the
inner screen cracked after a couple of hours of use. One user said their phone
didn’t even get past the setup screen before cracking. Apple's foldable iPhone Duo draws early complaints of screen

What did Mark Gurman say on X?
NEW: iPhone Duo screen-cracking issue is real. Apple hasn’t given stores or customer service representatives guidance but the company is investigating. Several people have sent me images and stories of their new $2000 device breaking within hours. https://t.co/LeikQ7qDtH
— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) October 26, 2026
Mark Gurman is Bloomberg’s Apple reporter, and he was one of
the first to put this on the radar. On October 26, he reported that several
owners had sent him images and accounts of cracks appearing shortly after
purchase. His post on X said flatly that the screen-cracking
issue is real. dexerto
He also noted that Apple hadn’t given its stores or customer
service reps any guidance yet, but was investigating. He verified the problem
with more than half a dozen customers who supplied photos of the damage or
records of their support chats with Apple. That’s a good sign the reports are
genuine, though it’s still a small sample. ithinkdiff
Not everyone is convinced. Some tech commentators have
questioned parts of the viral claims, so treat any random cracked-screen photo
on your feed with a little suspicion. A cracked phone is real. A recycled meme
is not. 😄 cybernews
What did Apple say?
Soon after Gurman’s post, Apple said it is aware of an issue
affecting the inner display of a small number of iPhone Duo units. The
statement did not say what causes it. Apple has reportedly asked engineers to
examine faulty devices. etvbharatacs
“Small number” is Apple’s wording. Nobody outside Apple
knows the real count yet.
Why is it happening?
Nobody knows for sure. iFixit built a 3D model of the hinge
from teardown footage, patents and CT scans. Their theory is that the center
support bar may not drop far enough, so the folded screen comes down onto it
and creates a small stress hotspot near where breaks were reported. ithinkdiff
In simple words: it may not be weak glass. It may be a hinge
part poking where it shouldn’t. The teardown doesn’t establish a definitive
cause, so this is a hypothesis, not a verdict. hothardware
Is it really that bad?
We don’t know yet.

What about Filipino buyers?
Philippine pre-orders opened October 16, and local
availability starts October 30. Abroad, shipping dates have reportedly slipped
to January, so many people are waiting anyway. (confirm what you’ve seen
locally before keeping this line) gadgetpilipinastechradar
If you pre-ordered, keep your receipt and buy only from an
Apple-authorized seller. I haven’t verified how replacements work for
Philippine buyers, so ask your seller in writing before anything goes wrong.
What I’d do
If you already own one, open and close it gently. No bend
tests for fun. Apple’s guidance suggests checking the hinge for dust or
particles and removing third-party cases or screen protectors. If you see a
line or hear a crunch, contact AppleCare right away and take photos for your
records. macworld
If you’re still deciding, wait a few weeks. Let the early
buyers be the test pilots, and watch for Apple to announce a cause or a fix.
Before I Close This Tab
First-generation gadgets are exciting, but they’re also the
ones that find the bugs. Foldables have been through this before, and Apple
isn’t immune. The real test is how fast Apple fixes it.
For me, the iPhone Duo stays an admire-from-the-sidewalk
phone, at least until my wife approves the budget. 😄
