Verify Your PayPal Account in the Philippines — 2026 Edition

Updated: March 2026

In September 2013, I published a post about verifying your PayPal account using an East West Bank VISA debit card. It was one of the first posts on this blog. It collected 47 comments over the years — questions, answers, troubleshooting, people helping each other figure out the 4-digit code that PayPal sends when you link a card.

That post is still live. People still find it through Google. And almost everything in it is now outdated. 😄

I still use PayPal in 2026. My most regular transaction is paying for my Namecheap domain renewal — mavscorner.com, the very blog you are reading right now. Simple, recurring, and PayPal makes it frictionless. So this is not just a content update. This is me, thirteen years later, explaining how the process I originally wrote about has completely changed — and what actually works now.

What Changed Since 2013

The original post described going to an East West Bank branch to get the 4-digit verification code that PayPal sends when it charges your card. The teller would look up the transaction in the bank's system and give you the code verbally.

That process is unnecessary now for two reasons. First, most Philippine banks with online banking portals show PayPal's small verification charge in your transaction history with the 4-digit code visible as part of the transaction description — no branch visit required. Second, and more significantly, PayPal has added multiple new verification methods that did not exist in 2013 — including direct bank account linking and verification through Philippine digital wallets.

The interface itself is also completely different. The old Profile > Add/Edit Credit Card menu path is gone. Everything now lives in the Wallet section.

What PayPal Verification Actually Does in 2026

Before the process — a quick clarification that confuses many first-time users.

You do not need a verified PayPal account to receive money. Anyone can send funds to your PayPal email address as soon as your account is registered. What verification unlocks is the ability to withdraw funds to a Philippine bank account and to send payments without restrictions.

The process to verify a PayPal account includes linking a bank account or card. However, you don't need to do this to receive a payment to your PayPal account. Others can send you money as soon as your account is up and running — but you won't be able to withdraw your funds from PayPal until you link a bank account.

For someone like me who uses PayPal primarily to pay for things — like Namecheap domain renewals — verification is what allows me to add a card and use it as a payment method without restrictions.

Option 1 — Link a Debit or Credit Card (The Classic Method)

This is the updated version of what the 2013 post described. The core process is the same — PayPal charges a small amount to your card and you enter a 4-digit code to confirm ownership — but the steps and the code retrieval are different now.

Step 1: Log in to your PayPal account at paypal.com/ph or through the PayPal app.

Step 2: Go to Wallet in the top left navigation menu.

Step 3: Click/Tap Add banks and cards.

Step 4: Scan your Card or enter your card number, expiration date, and CVV (the 3-digit number at the back of your card).

Step 5: Click Link Card. PayPal will make a small charge to your card — usually less than ₱100 equivalent — which will be refunded after verification is complete.

Step 6: Find the 4-digit code. This is where things are different from 2013. Check your bank's online app or internet banking portal — the PayPal charge will appear in your transaction history with a description that includes the 4-digit code. Most major Philippine banks display this automatically. You no longer need to visit a branch unless your bank's online system does not show transaction descriptions clearly.

Step 7: Back in PayPal, go to Wallet, find your linked card, click Confirm, and enter the 4-digit code. Your card is now linked and verified.

You can link up to 4 cards to your unverified PayPal account. When your account is verified, you can link up to 24 cards. A card can only be linked to 1 PayPal account at a time.

Which debit cards work in the Philippines?

Any VISA or Mastercard debit card from a Philippine bank that is enabled for online international transactions should work. BDO, BPI, Metrobank, UnionBank, Security Bank, Landbank, and yes — East West Bank — all issue VISA or Mastercard debit cards that are generally compatible with PayPal. The key requirement is that the card must be enabled for online and international transactions. Some banks have this enabled by default. Others require you to activate it through their app or by calling customer service.

Option 2 — Link a Philippine Bank Account Directly

This method did not exist in any practical form in 2013. Now it is available and often more reliable than card linking for withdrawal purposes.

To link and confirm a Philippine bank account, go to Wallet, find the option to link a bank, enter your bank account details, and PayPal will send a small test deposit to confirm ownership. Once received, input the amount in your PayPal account to confirm the link.

Most major Philippine banks are supported including BDO, BPI, Metrobank, UnionBank, RCBC, and others. Once your bank account is linked and confirmed, you can withdraw PayPal funds directly to your Philippine bank — the transfer typically takes 1 to 5 business days depending on your bank.

Option 3 — Link a Digital Wallet (GCash or Maya)

This is the most 2026 thing in this entire post. When I first wrote about PayPal in 2013, GCash was barely relevant and PayMaya did not exist yet. Now both are fully functional PayPal linking options.

Those without a bank account or credit card can link their fully verified digital wallets such as GCash, PayMaya, or Payoneer and can use PayPal without any limitations. Verifying your PayMaya account on PayPal is as good as a credit or debit card, meaning you can transfer funds from PayMaya to PayPal and vice versa.

For Maya specifically, the process uses your Maya Virtual Visa Card number — available in the Maya app under the Cards section — which you link to PayPal the same way you would a regular debit card. The 4-digit verification code arrives via SMS to your registered mobile number rather than in a bank statement. Clean and instant.

I personally use Maya linked to my PayPal as my primary payment method for online transactions. My workflow is simple — I only load money into my Maya wallet when there is a specific transaction coming up, like my annual Namecheap domain renewal for mavscorner.com or whenever I purchase ebooks or digital products online. Load the exact amount, pay, done. No maintaining balance anxiety, no unnecessary funds sitting in a digital wallet. Just load what you need, when you need it. Convenient and completely hassle-free.

I also have my Landbank account linked to PayPal as a backup for withdrawals, but Maya handles the day-to-day online payment transactions without any friction.

How I Use PayPal in 2026 — The Maya and Namecheap Setup

My PayPal account has Maya linked as the primary payment method. The workflow is straightforward — I load money into my Maya wallet only when a specific transaction is coming up. Namecheap domain renewal for mavscorner.com. An ebook purchase. Any digital product that requires online payment. Load the exact amount needed, process the payment through PayPal, done.

No maintaining balance sitting idle. No card details exposed unnecessarily across multiple platforms. No trips to a bank. Just Maya, PayPal, and whatever I need to pay for — handled in minutes from my phone.

For withdrawals when I receive payments through PayPal, I have my Landbank account linked as the destination. The balance transfers to my local account within 3 to 5 business days.

That combination — Maya for sending payments, Landbank for receiving withdrawals — covers everything I need from PayPal in 2026 without overcomplicating the setup.

If you are a blogger, freelancer, or anyone who makes occasional online purchases from international platforms, this is honestly the simplest and most cost-effective PayPal setup available to Filipinos right now.

Ready to set up Maya? You can download the app and register here: [referral link] — and yes, that is my referral link. Full disclosure always on Mav's Corner.

Common Issues in 2026 — And How to Fix Them

Card gets declined when linking: Make sure your card is enabled for online and international transactions. Call your bank or check your banking app for card controls — some banks disable international transactions by default for security.

Cannot find the 4-digit code: Check your bank's app under transaction history. Look for a transaction from PayPal — the description should include the code. If your bank does not show transaction descriptions, call their customer service and ask them to read you the PayPal charge description.

Card already linked to another account: A card can only be linked to one PayPal account at a time. You'll be able to add your card to another PayPal account once you've removed it from the account it's currently linked to. If you think your card was linked to an old forgotten account, contact PayPal support.

Account limitations after verification: Some accounts face additional identity verification requirements — PayPal may ask for a government-issued ID or proof of address. This is normal and usually resolved by submitting the requested documents through the PayPal Resolution Center.

Mavs' Final Diagnosis

PayPal in 2026 is significantly more accessible for Filipinos than it was in 2013. The old process of visiting a bank branch to get a verification code — which was the main practical contribution of the original post — is no longer necessary for most users. Digital banking has made the code visible in your transaction history directly.

The addition of GCash and Maya as linking options means that even Filipinos without traditional bank accounts can now fully verify their PayPal accounts and access all features.

If you are a freelancer receiving international payments, a blogger paying for domain and hosting services, or anyone who regularly transacts online with international platforms — having a verified PayPal account in 2026 is still one of the most reliable tools available in the Philippines.

Thirteen years since that first post. The platform changed completely. The usefulness did not.

  1. Hi,

I tried verifying my eastwest debit card on paypal, however when I went to the bank, the 4-digit code to confirm the activation is missing on my transaction history. Does it take days for the 4-digit code to appear? Did you wait a few days before you went to the bank to get the 4-digit code? Thanks!

    1. after you created an account on online, merong kang ipiprint tapos dalhin mo sa branch mo kasi kelangan ipaapprove mo muna yung account mo online. Sila ang magaactivate ng account mo online. Same thing goes kung mag add ka pa ng another account. Kaya twice ako pumunta ng branch para magpaapprove lang. Yung first time may pinaprint sa akin tapos yung second time, wala na pinaprint.

    2. no need to open an account with the bank kung prepaid card lang. just bring the necessary docs and IDs and pay the fees.

now as for debit cards, remember that ALL debit cards are connected to a bank account. Hindi sha tulad ng prepaid na pwedeng zero balance dahil ang bank account is may maintaining balance. Yung EastWest basic account only has P100 maintaining and P500 to earn interest (one of the lowest maintaining balance in the industry) that comes with a debit card already. Most savings account from banks come with a debit card with mastercard or visa logos already.

I have two basic accounts with EastWest for security purposes, one I use for purchases and the other where I maintain my funds. Kaya I just transfer funds online very easily.

And good news to prepaid cardholders. I believe we may now reload online. I'm still in the process of enrolling my prepaid card and I'll get back to you once I have successfully done reloading it using my online account.
