Philippines Named Asia's Best Cruise Destination for 2023
I saw the news while scrolling through my phone one afternoon at the office.
Philippines Named Asia's Best Cruise Destination for 2023 — World Cruise Awards.
I read it twice. Then I smiled.
Not the polite smile you give when someone shows you a meme you've already seen. The real one. The kind that comes when something you already know finally gets official recognition.
Because honestly? Anyone who has been to this country — or even just lived here — already knows. You didn't need an award to tell you that.
But it's still nice when the world catches up.
What Is the World Cruise Awards?
Think of it like the Oscars — but for the cruise industry.
The World Cruise Awards is an annual global recognition program that ranks the best cruise lines, cruise ships, and cruise destinations worldwide. Winning Asia's Best Cruise Destination is a big deal. It means the Philippines beat out every other country in the region — Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, all of them.
And we won.
Why the Philippines? Let Me Count the Ways.
I work here in Surigao del Norte. Part of my job involves helping local MSMEs — small businesses — package and market their products. And one thing I've noticed over the years is that we Filipinos sometimes underestimate what we have.
We see our beaches every day. We pass by the sea on our way to work. We eat freshly caught fish for lunch like it's nothing special.
But it is special. Incredibly special.
Here's what the rest of the world is paying to come see:
7,641 islands. Every one of them different. You can spend a lifetime exploring this country and still find a beach you've never seen before.
Palawan. Puerto Princesa's Underground River is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. El Nido's limestone cliffs and hidden lagoons look like something out of a fantasy movie. Coron has sunken Japanese warships that divers come from all over the world to explore.
Cebu. History, food, beaches, and whale sharks — all in one province. Where else can you swim with the biggest fish in the ocean in the morning and eat lechon for lunch?
Boracay. White Beach remains one of the finest stretches of sand anywhere in Asia. The water is the kind of blue that doesn't look real in photos.
Intramuros, Manila. For those who want history — the old walled city built by the Spanish in 1571 still stands. Walk through it and you can feel four centuries of Philippine history under your feet.
And this is just scratching the surface.
What Makes a Cruise Destination Win?
It's not just about pretty beaches. The judges look at:
The variety of destinations available along the cruise route. The infrastructure — ports, accessibility, safety. The cultural experience passengers get. And the people.
That last one — I believe — is where the Philippines wins every time.
Filipinos are genuinely warm. Not performance-warm, not customer-service warm. Actually warm. When someone arrives here lost and confused, a random stranger will walk them to where they need to go. Not point — walk.
That's not something you can fake. And cruise passengers notice it.
A Personal Note
I've never been on a cruise ship. That's the honest truth.
But I've taken a boat from Surigao to Siargao. I've watched the sunrise from a roro ferry crossing open water. I've seen the sea from a bangka, cutting through the waves with nothing but a life vest and faith.
And every single time, I think the same thing.
We live in a beautiful country.
The award just made it official. But for those of us who've been here all along — we already knew.
If you've been thinking about planning a cruise through Asia, the Philippines is the answer. Not because of an award. But because the islands, the food, the sea, and the people will give you something no trophy can describe.
Okay, Last Thing — I Promise
If you're a foreign tourist planning to visit — welcome. You're going to love it here.
And if you're Filipino reading this — go explore your own country first. Before the cruise ships come and the world discovers what we've been sitting on all along.
The Philippines has always been worth it. Now the world just has proof.
